Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on one 608 km spine: verified 2026 fares and timetables, plus day-by-day 7- and 10-day routes starting in Vilnius.
Fast Answer
Seven days covers all three Baltic capitals: Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn sit on a spine of about 608 km, and each hop is a coach of a little over four hours costing €14.90–€17 with Lux Express. Ten days is better: the extra days buy the Curonian Spit or the Gauja valley without a third transfer day. The Baltic states are exactly three countries — Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — covering 175,214 km² with 6,093,433 people on 1 January 2026, all using the euro and all inside Schengen: one currency, no border checks.
Definition
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Three countries, no more: the term has covered these three, and only these three, since the Second World War. Together they cover 175,214 km² and held 6,093,433 people on 1 January 2026 (Eurostat, updated 21 July 2026). All three joined NATO and the EU in 2004.
| Country | Capital (residents) | Population, 1 Jan 2026 | Land area | Language family | Euro since |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lithuania | Vilnius (607,667) | 2,887,592 | 65,284 km² | Baltic (Indo-European) | 2015 |
| Latvia | Riga (591,881) | 1,845,096 | 64,594 km² | Baltic (Indo-European) | 2014 |
| Estonia | Tallinn (about 460,000) | 1,360,745 | 45,336 km² | Finnic (Finno-Ugric) | 2011 |
Lithuania is the largest on both counts, and one figure is newer than most reference pages carry: on 2 June 2025 Vilnius was confirmed the largest city in the Baltic states, 607,667 residents against Riga's 591,881.
Common Confusion
Because a Baltic Sea state is not a Baltic state. Finland and Poland belong to the Council of the Baltic Sea States, whose members the CBSS lists as Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia and Sweden. "Baltic states" is the narrower political term and means Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania only. History binds those three: independence in 1918 (Lithuania 16 February, Estonia 24 February, Latvia 18 November), Soviet annexation in 1940, and independence restored — Lithuania 11 March 1990, Estonia and Latvia 20–21 August 1991.
The trap is language. Estonian is Finno-Ugric and close to Finnish, which makes Finland feel like part of the set; Latvian and Lithuanian are the only surviving Baltic languages and are not mutually intelligible, so no phrasebook covers the trip. English is the working language, and the thank-yous are ačiū, paldies and aitäh.
Geography
Lithuania at the bottom, Latvia in the middle, Estonia at the top, the capitals almost in a line up the western side. Vilnius to Riga is 296 km by road, Riga to Tallinn 312 km, so the whole spine is about 608 km — eight to nine hours of driving across a week. Riga is the hinge: near the midpoint and airBaltic's hub.
| Leg | Road distance | Scheduled coach time |
|---|---|---|
| Vilnius – Riga | 296 km | 4h00–4h15 |
| Riga – Tallinn | 312 km | 4h20–4h40 |
| Vilnius – Tallinn | 604 km via Riga | 8h25–9h30 direct; 11h57 via Riga |
| Kaunas – Riga | 267 km | about 5h34 |
The Kaunas row is the one to notice: 29 km closer to Riga than Vilnius, yet about an hour and a half slower. Kaunas–Tallinn is 576 km and about 13h07. Start in Vilnius.
Transport 2026
Take the coach unless a departure time or a Hill of Crosses stop makes the train better. Figures read from the operators' booking systems on 31 August 2026, for travel on 15 September 2026.
| Leg | Option | Time | 2026 fare | Departures a day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vilnius – Riga | Lux Express coach | 4h00–4h15 | €14.90 campaign / €17 economy / €31–€32 Lounge | 6 |
| Vilnius – Riga | LTG Link train | 4h04 (07:30–11:34) | €24 second class / €34 first | 1 |
| Vilnius – Riga | airBaltic | about 0:50 in the air | from €45 | see airBaltic |
| Riga – Tallinn | Lux Express coach | 4h20–4h40 | €14.90 campaign / €17 economy | 11 |
| Riga – Tallinn | Train, change at Valga | Riga 11:38 → Tallinn 17:34 | about €30.50 | 1 |
| Vilnius – Tallinn | Lux Express direct coach | 8h25–9h30 | €19.90 campaign / €22 economy / €39 Lounge | 5 |
| Vilnius – Tallinn | Through train ticket | 10h04, one change at Valga | €39 | 1 |
| Vilnius – Tallinn | airBaltic | routing not confirmed | from €39 | see airBaltic |
On Vilnius–Riga train and coach take the same four hours and the train costs about €7 more, so choose on departure time, not speed. On Riga–Tallinn the coach wins outright, eleven departures against one rail connection. On Vilnius–Tallinn the 22:30 direct coach is quickest at 8h25, arriving 06:55.
Coach
Lux Express is the default. For 15 September 2026 it showed six direct Vilnius to Riga coaches — 06:30, 09:00, 12:00, 15:00, 17:30 and 22:30 — at 4h00 to 4h15. Riga–Tallinn is the busiest leg: eleven direct departures each way, northbound at 02:35, 07:00, 09:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:30, 14:00, 15:00, 16:40, 18:00 and 19:30, taking 4h20 to 4h40. And there is a direct Vilnius–Tallinn coach with no change at all, which many itineraries assume does not exist: 06:30, 09:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 22:30, at 8h25 to 9h30.
| Lux Express fare band | Vilnius–Riga and Riga–Tallinn | Vilnius–Tallinn direct |
|---|---|---|
| Baltic campaign seat | €14.90 | €19.90 |
| Standard economy | €17 (occasionally €20 on peak days) | €22 |
| Lounge (business class) | €31–€32 | €39 |
The €14.90 campaign fare is capacity-limited, not date-limited. One sampled Vilnius–Riga departure had two campaign seats left against fourteen economy seats: a quota that empties, not a promotion that expires. Book early and pay €14.90; turn up and pay €17 for the identical seat.
Winter thins the timetable: on 9 December 2026 the system showed five Vilnius–Riga departures instead of six (the 06:30 goes), eight Riga–Tallinn instead of eleven and three direct Vilnius–Tallinn instead of five, fares unchanged. The booking horizon is short: on 31 August 2026 every leg returned results for 13 January 2027 and nothing for 10 March 2027.
Two bags travel free — one cabin bag up to 45 × 35 × 20 cm, one hold bag up to 23 kg — and boarding starts 15 minutes before departure. Coaches carry Wi-Fi, 220 V sockets and a WC, and the main stops are the central coach stations. Ecolines runs the same legs and calls itself the largest coach operator in the Baltic states, so check both — and our Lithuania transport guide covers the domestic legs.
The Overlooked Option
There is a direct daily train from Vilnius to Riga, and a single €39 through ticket that carries you to Tallinn. Several of the best-known Baltic itineraries say you must take a bus; they are out of date. LTG Link publishes it: Vilnius 07:30, Riga 11:34 — four hours four minutes, no transfers, every day, €24 second class and €34 first. The return leaves Riga 16:55, Vilnius 21:01.
| Northbound stop | Departs |
|---|---|
| Vilnius | 07:30 |
| Kaišiadorys | 08:10 |
| Jonava | 08:29 |
| Kėdainiai | 08:49 |
| Radviliškis | 09:28 |
| Šiauliai | 09:45 |
| Joniškis | 10:22 |
| Jelgava | 10:57–11:00 |
| Riga | arrives 11:34 |
It does not call at Kaunas. Kaunas is on a different line, so from there you take a coach or get to Vilnius or Kaišiadorys first.
The change for Tallinn is cross-platform at Valga. The 2026 chain: LTG Link Vilnius 07:30 → Riga 11:34, Vivi Riga 11:38 → Valga 14:05, Elron Valga 14:13 → Tallinn 17:34 — 10h04 end to end, one change, onto a train on the same platform. LTG Link calls it preliminary, so re-check before booking around it.
Southbound is not a mirror image. Tallinn 10:25 → Valga 13:58, Valga 14:23 → Riga 16:48, Riga 16:55 → Vilnius 21:01: 10h36, with a seven-minute Riga connection. Seven minutes is not a connection, it is a hope. Going south, sleep in Riga and split the journey.
Extras are cheap and published: bicycle €10, pet ticket €5, Interrail or Eurail seat reservation €5, children under 6 free, 6–16 half price. Book ahead: LTG Link warns that international tickets "are often sold out in advance". Advance second class can start below €24 (seat61 records €9.60–€24), and Riga–Tallinn alone is quoted around €30.50, so the €39 through ticket wins end to end.
The train also calls at Šiauliai at 09:45, and Šiauliai–Riga onward is €17 second class, which turns a Hill of Crosses stop into a break of journey rather than a detour.
Flights
Rarely worth it inside the triangle, very much worth it for getting in and out. airBaltic states the Vilnius–Riga flight is approximately 0:50 hours long, with one-way economy from €45 and Vilnius–Tallinn from €39 — the same price as the through train ticket.
Do the door-to-door arithmetic, not the flight time. A coach runs city centre to city centre in four hours for €17; a fifty-minute flight must absorb two airport transfers plus check-in and security at both ends, which on Vilnius–Riga erases the gap and costs more. We could not confirm on airBaltic's pages whether its Vilnius–Tallinn service is nonstop or routes via Riga, so check before assuming it saves a day.
Where flying earns its place is the open-jaw booking: into Vilnius, north overland, out of Tallinn. See cheap flights to Lithuania and the Vilnius airport transfer for the arrival end.

Driving
A one-way drop between the Baltic capitals is a published fee in the hundreds of euros, and most itinerary pages wave at it without a number. One operator lists its tariff plainly.
| One-way route | Published drop fee |
|---|---|
| Tallinn – Pärnu | €98 |
| Tallinn – Tartu | €135 |
| Tallinn – Riga | €195 |
| Tallinn – Vilnius | €265 |
| Tallinn – Kaunas | €275 |
Treat €195–€275 as a published band from one small operator, not a universal price: the fee depends on the car, the country and the rental period. It is still the number that decides whether a road trip makes sense.
The second charge catches people out because it is not a charge until it goes wrong. A cross-border one-way rental needs explicit authorisation written into the agreement; drive a Lithuanian hire car into Latvia or Estonia without it and you can void the insurance.
For capitals only, skip the car: 608 km of driving buys nothing the coach does not, and you pay to park in three old towns. A car earns its keep only for the Curonian Spit, the Gauja valley or Lahemaa.
Reality Check
Nothing. There is no Rail Baltica passenger service in 2026, and the line will not reach Vilnius in its first phase. The European Commission's executive agency is precise: Phase I runs Tallinn–Salaspils–Kaunas to the Polish border, targeted for 2030; Riga, Riga Airport and Vilnius are Phase II, "to be determined after 2030".
The project is real: almost 900 km through the three countries, over 1,200 km with Poland, standard European 1435 mm gauge, 249 km/h design speed. Track laying has begun on the Šveicarija–Žeimiai section in Jonava district, 114 km between Kaunas and Panevėžys is under construction, and about 43% of the Baltic mainline is construction-ready. For a 2026 trip it changes nothing: anyone selling you a Rail Baltica journey is selling a plan, not a train.
Decision
North — Vilnius, then Riga, then Tallinn — and the timetables are the argument. The through rail journey runs 10h04 northbound against 10h36 southbound, and the southbound version hangs on that seven-minute Riga connection. The direct Vilnius–Tallinn coaches favour the same direction. Vilnius has the largest old town of the three capitals, and Tallinn's ferry links to Helsinki and Stockholm make it the better exit.
The counter-case: Riga is airBaltic's hub, so inbound fares there are often the lowest. If your flights make Riga the cheap entry, start there and take one capital as an out-and-back. Either way, book open-jaw: repeating a four-hour leg to reach your arrival airport is the commonest way to lose a day.
Itinerary
Seven days buys three capitals and one side trip. Two of those days contain a four-hour transfer, and pretending otherwise is how these trips fall apart on day four.
Days 1–2, Vilnius. The old town, Gediminas Hill and Užupis fill two unhurried days, and this is the capital most itineraries short-change. Read the Vilnius travel guide and where to stay in Vilnius; the district matters more than the hotel.
Day 3, Trakai then north. Take Trakai as a half-day and the 15:00 Lux Express to Riga, which puts you there around 19:15 for €14.90–€17. Skip Trakai and take the 07:30 train instead, arriving 11:34 with the afternoon intact, for €24.
Days 4–5, Riga. The Art Nouveau district and the Central Market are what Riga does better than anywhere else, and a half-day to Jūrmala is the easiest add-on in the Baltics.
Days 6–7, Tallinn. The 09:00 or 10:00 coach from Riga leaves you the afternoon in the old town; with eleven departures a day you can change your mind late. Kadriorg and Telliskivi fill day seven. Book the Vilnius nights first.
Itinerary
Do not rewrite the seven-day plan — extend it. Three extra days buy one thing worth having, and there are two candidates.
The Lithuanian version, the one we would pick. Add Klaipėda and two nights on the Curonian Spit at Nida or Juodkrantė before heading north: the most distinctive landscape of the three countries. Start with the Curonian Spit guide, Klaipėda and the coast and where to stay on the Curonian Spit. Kaunas fits on the way west, but do not leave the country from there: Kaunas–Riga is 267 km yet about 5h34.
The rail version. Break the 07:30 Vilnius–Riga train at Šiauliai at 09:45 for the Hill of Crosses and continue later for €17 second class. Then add Sigulda or Cēsis in the Gauja valley, on the Riga–Valga line you are already using, and Tartu or Lahemaa at the Estonian end.
The spit version wants a car, the rail version does not. If you drive, price the one-way drop against the €195–€275 band above and consider renting for the coast leg only, returning the car in Lithuania before continuing north by coach.
Timing
May and September, if the choice is yours. Temperatures below come from the official 1991–2020 climate norm used by Lithuania's meteorological service — approximate chart readings, not published point values.
| Period | Typical temperature | Transport | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| June–August | July around 18 °C, the warmest month | 13 daily Riga–Tallinn trips from 1 June | Longest days, fullest timetables, most crowds |
| May and September | around 12–13 °C | Six Vilnius–Riga, eleven Riga–Tallinn in September | Best balance of weather, services and space |
| December–February | January and February around −3 °C | Five Vilnius–Riga, eight Riga–Tallinn, three direct Vilnius–Tallinn | Christmas markets, thin schedules |
No competing page quantifies the winter penalty. You do not lose the route in December; you lose one of the six Vilnius–Riga departures, three of the eleven Riga–Tallinn and two of the five direct Vilnius–Tallinn coaches. Fares do not rise — what you lose is flexibility. Our when to visit Lithuania guide goes month by month, and events in Lithuania covers dates worth planning around.
Practicalities
One currency, one time zone, no border checks: the euro since 2011 in Estonia, 2014 in Latvia and 2015 in Lithuania, and Schengen since 21 December 2007, so the coach does not stop at either frontier.
What does not merge is everything commercial. Three rail operators run the Vilnius–Tallinn chain — LTG Link, Vivi and Elron — which is why the through journey changes at Valga rather than running as one train. Rental tariffs are national, which is why the drop fee exists. Ticketing is per-operator: a Lux Express booking does not help on Ecolines, or on the train. Plan the sequence with our Lithuania trip planner.
Fares and timetables verified 31 August 2026 against operator booking systems, for travel dates 15 September and 9 December 2026.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — three countries only. Together they cover 175,214 km² and had 6,093,433 people on 1 January 2026 (Eurostat). Lithuania is the largest by both area (65,284 km²) and population (2,887,592).
No. Finland and Poland sit on the Baltic Sea and are members of the Council of the Baltic Sea States alongside Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, but the term 'Baltic states' means only Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Being a Baltic Sea country is not the same as being a Baltic state.
Four hours to four hours fifteen. Lux Express runs six direct coaches a day, at 06:30, 09:00, 12:00, 15:00, 17:30 and 22:30, for €17 standard or €14.90 on limited campaign seats. The road distance is 296 km.
Yes, and most guides get this wrong. LTG Link runs a direct daily Vilnius–Riga train, Vilnius 07:30 to Riga 11:34, for €24 in second class. A single €39 through ticket takes you all the way to Tallinn, arriving 17:34, with one cross-platform change at Valga.
Seven days covers the three capitals plus one side trip such as Trakai, with two transfers of about four hours each. Ten days is the better length — it adds the Curonian Spit or the Gauja valley without turning the trip into a series of bus rides.
North, from Vilnius to Riga to Tallinn, for most travellers. The through train runs 10h04 northbound against 10h36 southbound with only a seven-minute Riga connection, the direct Vilnius–Tallinn coaches favour that direction, and Tallinn's ferries to Helsinki and Stockholm make it a better exit point.
Expect a published drop fee in the €195–€275 range: one Baltic operator lists Tallinn–Riga at €195 and Tallinn–Vilnius at €265. The fee is separate from cross-border authorisation, which must be written into your rental agreement or your insurance may not cover the trip.
No to both. All three use the euro — Estonia since 2011, Latvia since 2014, Lithuania since 2015 — and all three have been in the Schengen area since 2007, so there are no border checks on the Vilnius–Riga–Tallinn route. They also share one time zone.
Not before 2030, and not to Vilnius even then. The European Commission's Phase I runs Tallinn–Kaunas to the Polish border by 2030; the Riga and Vilnius connections are Phase II, scheduled after 2030. In 2026 you travel on the existing network.
May and September give the best balance — around 12–13 °C, near-full transport frequencies and far fewer crowds than July, which averages about 18 °C. In December and January coach frequencies drop sharply, with direct Vilnius–Tallinn services down from five a day to three.
