Vilnius to Riga in 2026: Train, Bus, Flight and Drive

The Train

Is there a direct train from Vilnius to Riga?

Yes. LTG Link runs one direct train every day of the year with no changes. The operator states on its own route page that the routes are "direct, without any transfers", and answers its own FAQ question "Is this a direct route?" with "Yes, this route is direct." The train is wheelchair-adapted, carries bicycles, and has both first and second class.

Now the part nobody else publishes. LTG Link markets the service as Vilnius 07:30 to Riga 11:34, a journey of 4 hours 04 minutes. Its live booking engine tells a different story. Checked on 31 August 2026, the departure was 07:16 for 5 September, 07:13 for 15 September and 07:08 for 14 October, and every one of them still arrived at 11:34 — real journeys of 4h18, 4h21 and 4h26. The northbound 16:55 from Riga held on every date checked, but the Vilnius arrival ran between 21:11 and 21:22 against a printed 21:01, so 4h16 to 4h27.

Plan around 4 hours 20 minutes and an earlier alarm than the timetable suggests. LTG Link itself warns on the same page that "changes may occur throughout the year", so check your own date rather than trusting the annual graphic. The Vilnius to Riga train timetable and every stop

Seven intermediate stations, all of them in Lithuania except Jelgava. Times are LTG Link's published annual timetable; the northbound column runs bottom to top.

The Riga end is Riga Central Station, Stacijas laukums 2, LV-1050. The Vilnius end is the main railway station at Geležinkelio g. 16. One quirk worth knowing: tickets are not sold for the Jelgava to Riga leg in either direction, because the train operates no local service inside Latvia. Carry proof of identity even though nobody will stop you at the border.

The same train continues past Riga to Valga in Estonia, where you cross the platform to an Elron service for Tartu and Tallinn. A through ticket from Vilnius all the way to Tallinn costs €39, which makes the Riga leg look expensive by comparison.

Train fares, and why you have to book weeks ahead

The fare is flat: €24 in second class, €34 in first, on every date checked in September and October 2026, with no campaign price and no advance discount. Seat61, still the most-cited source for this route, quotes second class as "€9.60 to €24 (it varies)". That is out of date. Both LTG Link's printed price table and its live booking engine returned €24 every time, so waiting for a cheap advance fare is a way to miss the train, not a way to save money.

Segment fares matter more than they look, because they are what makes a stopover bookable:

Three things will catch you out. First, the booking window is short: on 31 August 2026 the last bookable departure was 19 October 2026, and 20 October onwards returned no journeys at all. That is roughly seven weeks of horizon, so an empty search for December does not mean the train has been cancelled. Second, one train a day genuinely sells out — on 31 August the engine showed two second-class seats left for 5 September, seven for 15 September and sixteen for 14 October. LTG Link warns that buying on board may be impossible because tickets "are often sold out in advance". Third, buy the day your date enters the window, not the week you travel.

Extras are cheap and fixed: a bicycle costs €10, a pet costs €5, and small animals in a carrier travel free up to two per passenger. An Interrail or Eurail seat reservation is €5 in either class. Children under 6 travel free if they do not take a seat of their own, one per adult, and 6 to 16 year olds pay half. There are no other concessions on the international route.

Common Mistake

You do not change trains at Daugavpils

This is the single most repeated error about the route, and it is easy to disprove. The direct train runs the western line through Šiauliai, Joniškis and Jelgava. Daugavpils is on the eastern line and appears nowhere in the timetable. It does not exist as a bookable station in LTG Link's system at all: of the 188 stops loaded in the booking engine, the only Latvian and Estonian ones are Jelgava, Riga, Valga, Tartu and Tallinn, and the only station on the old eastern line is Turmantas, the last Lithuanian town before the border.

LTG Link does run six trains a day from Vilnius to Turmantas, taking 2h03 to 2h28 and costing €5.88 to €9.80, and older guides mistake these for the first half of a Riga journey. They are not. They terminate inside Lithuania, and no through ticket to Daugavpils is sold. If you find advice telling you to change there, it describes a service that this timetable no longer contains.

While you are auditing sources: Rome2Rio correctly identifies the daily LTG Link train 889 at 4h04, but prices everything in US dollars and lists a "Bus via Pasvalys" at 5 hours 39 minutes that no traveller should ever pick over a direct coach.

Lux Express: the one to book if you care about the seat

Six coaches a day at 06:30, 09:00, 12:00, 15:00, 17:30 and 22:30, with a pattern that held on the September, October and November 2026 dates checked. Northbound, Riga to Vilnius runs at 02:55, 07:00, 09:30, 12:00, 14:50 and 17:30, arriving 06:55, 11:10, 13:40, 16:15, 19:05 and 21:50 — journeys of 4 hours to 4 hours 20 minutes.

Economy came out between €14.90 and €21.00 across seven departure dates queried on 31 August 2026, with €17.00 the most common standard fare and €14.90 a campaign price. The premium seat tier was €31.00 on every date and every departure that offered it. Services are operated by Lux Express Estonia AS on line EL-20, the Warsaw to Tallinn run, and line 949 from Vilnius to Tallinn, leaving from platform 19 at Vilnius Coach Station. The coach picks up again at the Panorama shopping centre 10 to 15 minutes later, which is useful if you are staying north-west of the old town, then runs via Panevėžys.

The operator's own fleet page, updated 10 August 2026, lists free Wi-Fi, charging at every seat, personal media screens, complimentary hot drinks, a toilet and air conditioning across a fleet of more than 105 coaches. The Scania Irizar i8 used on international routes puts Standard seats at the front and wider Relax seats at the rear, which the operator describes as offering more space to relax. Book the rear if the seat map lets you choose.

Skip the 22:30 unless you already have a bed booked in Riga. It arrives in the small hours, and arriving at a coach station at that time with nowhere to go is the most common self-inflicted mistake on this route.

Ecolines and FlixBus: the flat fare and the cheap one

Ecolines runs three coaches a day southbound, at 07:30 arriving 11:45, 12:00 arriving 16:00 and 18:00 arriving 21:55, plus a 16:30 arriving 20:30 on some dates. The fare is a flat €18.20 on every departure and every date queried on 31 August 2026, with no discount and no campaign price anywhere in the system. If you dislike watching a fare move, this is the one to book. Northbound it also runs the fastest scheduled coach in either direction: Riga 07:30 to Vilnius 11:15, 3 hours 45 minutes.

Two Ecolines warnings. It loads its timetable a shorter distance ahead than its rivals — on 31 August 2026 it was selling to 25 and 26 October and returned nothing from 31 October onward, which means winter dates were not yet on sale rather than withdrawn. And it does not run from Vilnius Airport to Riga: the airport stop on F. Vaitkaus g. exists in its system, but a search from it to Riga on 15 September 2026 returned zero services. FlixBus is the cheapest by a wide margin: €7.49 lead-in on 15 September 2026 and €7.99 on 14 October 2026, with a few departures at €15.49. That is less than a third of the train fare. All services are direct, with no transfers, operated by FlixBus Estonia OÜ. Boarding is from Sodų g. 22, Savanorių pr. 31 or Studentų g. 39, and the Studentų departures leave 15 to 20 minutes later but arrive 15 minutes sooner, with the fastest run at 3 hours 40 minutes. In Riga it uses Prāgas iela 1, platforms 1 to 4, 7 and 10 to 11. Onboard you get free Wi-Fi, power outlets, extra leg space, reclining seats and a toilet, and the baggage allowance is one 7 kg carry-on plus one 20 kg checked bag, both free — worth noting, because low headline fares elsewhere often are not.

Flights

Should you fly from Vilnius to Riga?

No, and this is one of the few travel questions with a clean answer. Riga does exist as a direct destination from Vilnius: the airport's own destination dataset lists it with the codes RIX and EVRA and a season value of null, meaning year-round rather than seasonal. So the flight is real. It is also pointless.

Rail Baltica's own modal comparison, built to argue for a railway rather than against an airline, puts Riga to Vilnius by plane at 1 hour 50 minutes and €125 once time spent at the airport is counted, against 4 hours and €25 by bus and 3 hours 30 minutes and €45 by car. You save roughly two hours and pay five times the coach fare, and you spend the saved time in security queues at both ends.

An honest caveat: we could not confirm the operating carrier or the frequency from the airline's own website, so this page publishes neither. If you have a specific reason to fly — a connection you must protect, or a flight arriving from elsewhere — check current schedules and fares directly.

Day Out

Breaking the journey: Hill of Crosses, Rundāle and Bauska

This is the only genuine argument for driving. Going Vilnius, Hill of Crosses, Rundāle, Riga comes to about 373 km against 293 km direct: roughly 80 extra kilometres turns a transfer into a full day out with two of the best sights in either country in it. The Hill of Crosses (Kryžių kalnas)

The hill stands about 12 km north of Šiauliai, on the land of Jurgaičiai and Domantai villages on the left bank of the Kulpė stream, right beside the road towards Riga. Driving, take the A12 towards Joniškis and Riga and turn right at the sign reading "KRYŽIŲ KALNAS – 2 km". From Šiauliai it is 11.4 km, about 13 minutes.

What makes it worth the detour is not the photograph, it is the arithmetic of persistence. There were about 20 crosses around 1850, roughly 130 by 1900, 155 in 1902, 200 and a chapel by 1914 and about 400 by 1923. A 14-station Way of the Cross was laid out around 1888. By 1990 there were about 55,000 large and small crosses.

In between, the Soviet record is precise and brutal. About 1,000 crosses were raised in defiance between 1956 and 1959. In April 1961, 2,179 crosses were destroyed. About 400 were demolished in 1973, the hill was ravaged twice in 1974 with about 400 more, and in the summer of 1976 every cross was destroyed and part of the hill itself was dug away. Crosses were toppled for the last time in 1985. Five years later there were 55,000 of them. Pope John Paul II prayed at the hill and celebrated Mass beside it on 7 September 1993, and established the Diocese of Šiauliai on 28 May 1997. The indulgence feast falls on the last Sunday of July, which is the one date to avoid if you want the place quiet.

Here is the trick no other guide connects: you do not need a car for this. The daily train calls at Šiauliai from 09:45 to 09:46 and at Joniškis from 10:22 to 10:23, and a Šiauliai to Riga ticket costs only €17, or €12 from Joniškis. Break the journey at Šiauliai, see the hill, and continue on a later service or a coach the same evening. We deliberately publish no parking or admission price for the site, because the official page still quotes them in litas, a currency withdrawn on 1 January 2015.

Rundāle Palace, and why the coach cannot take you

Rundāle Palace Museum gives its own directions as 67 km from Riga along the A7 to Bauska, then 12 km on the P103 to Pilsrundāle. The alternative runs Riga to Jelgava, 47 km on the A8, then 43 km on the A8 to Eleja and the P103. Independent routing confirms both: Bauska to Rundāle is 12.1 km and about 13 minutes, and Rundāle back to Riga is 78 km and about 1 hour 15 minutes.

Buying the €12 exhibition ticket and then discovering the garden is separate is the standard Rundāle mistake. A pupil in a group of ten or more pays €2.00, a family ticket is €15.00 for one adult and two pupils or €25.00 for two adults and two pupils, and an annual French garden pass is €20.00.

Opening hours in 2026: the museum runs 10:00 to 18:00 in May, from June to September and in October, and 10:00 to 17:00 from November to April. The French garden closes at 19:00 from June to September and stays open until 20:00 on Friday to Sunday in June, July and August. Access to the museum stops 30 minutes before closing and the ticket office shuts 40 minutes before, so a 17:30 arrival in October buys you nothing. The site is closed on 1 January, 24 December and 25 December.

Now the fact that decides your whole itinerary: the coaches do not go there. Lux Express runs via Panevėžys and its only intermediate stops between Vilnius and Riga are the Panorama shopping centre and Panevėžys Coach Station. No operator on this route stops at Bauska, and none stops at Šiauliai. So Rundāle is a car-only stop coming from Vilnius, or else a separate day trip out of Riga. We also give no hours or prices for Bauska Castle, because its own website refused every connection when we checked on 31 August 2026 — verify directly before you build a schedule around it.

Rail Baltica: what changes, and when

Not before 2030, so it should not affect a 2026 booking, but it is worth knowing what is coming. RB Rail states that more than 40% of the mainline is already under construction or construction-ready and that all current works are aligned with the 2030 target, with the honest caveat that keeping the pace depends on timely financing in the years ahead.

The technical shape of it: about 900 km of line at 1,435 mm European standard gauge, a design speed of 249 km/h for passenger trains, electrified at 2x25 kV, ERTMS Level 2 signalling, single track in phase one. Elron, Vivi and LTG Link have already launched a joint tender for up to 20 regional trains capable of 200 km/h, and seven international passenger stations are planned, among them Vilnius, Kaunas, Panevėžys, Riga and Riga airport. Verdict

So which should you actually take?

Whatever you pick, note when you land. The 22:30 Lux Express arrives in the small hours and the northbound train reaches Vilnius between 21:11 and 21:22, so the next decision after the ticket is usually the bed. Seasonal frequency shifts too — the 06:30 Lux Express dropped out of the December 2026 and January 2027 timetables — which is one more reason to read when to visit Lithuania before fixing dates.
