Getting There
Vilnius to Trakai is about 28 km. Train and bus both take a little over half an hour and leave from adjoining stations in Vilnius: the bus station is at Sodų g. 22, right next to the railway station. Both are inexpensive for the distance, but neither operator publishes a fixed fare table for this route, so check the price for your own date before you count on a figure.

Which to pick: they are close in time and price, and the two Trakai stations are a couple of minutes apart, so neither wins on the walk to the castle. The bus runs a little more often; the train is the calmer ride and, on the timetables in force through the summer of 2026, it is also the one that runs latest — the last train leaves Trakai at about 20:45, the last route 7 bus at 20:00. Buy train tickets on ltglink.lt or in the app, where you can add the Trakai combined ticket that also covers Trakai city buses in both directions on your day of travel. Confirm exact times before you set out: the Vilnius–Trakai railway has been running on temporary engineering-works timetables through 2026, and the published schedule is reissued every few weeks.
Both Trakai stations sit at the southern end of town, roughly 2.5–3 km from the Island Castle — a flat, scenic 30–40 minute walk along the lakeshore. To skip the walk, take the Trakai city bus run by Trakų autobusai: it calls at the bus station, the railway station and the Pilis/TIC stop beside the castle, with about a dozen runs on weekdays and eight at weekends, and it covers the distance in five to eight minutes. Neither the town bus fare nor Bolt's ride-hailing prices are published in advance, so check in the app or on board. On the water, rowing boats and pedal boats are rented from the shore opposite the Island Castle in the warm months, and guided canoe tours of the Trakai lakes run from April to October; the official Trakai tourism information center lists the operators and their phone numbers but not their prices, so ask on the day.
Planning Dates: Late 2026 into 2027
- Through 30 September 2026: high-season castle admission (€14 / €7) and the longest opening hours, 10:00–19:00 daily. The Trakai city bus keeps its weekend extension out to Užutrakis Manor until 27 September 2026.
- From 1 October 2026: low-season admission (€12 / €6), and the castle closes on Mondays. October and November hours are 10:00–18:00, Tuesday to Sunday.
- December 2026 to February 2027: the castle opens Wednesday to Sunday only, 10:00–18:00 — the days to avoid are Monday and Tuesday.
- March 2027: back to Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00, still at low-season prices.
- From April 2027: high-season admission and daily 10:00–19:00 opening return, and the lake boat season restarts.
Those prices and hours are the Trakai History Museum's own published figures. The museum can change them, and it lists them at trakaimuziejus.lt, so re-check before you commit to a date.
Best Area to Stay (if extending overnight)
Most travelers return to Vilnius. If you stay overnight, prioritize lake access and walkability.

Train and bus work, but a rental car gives you the castle, nearby lakes, and a return stop inside Trakai Historical National Park, most obviously Užutrakis Manor, without waiting for scheduled connections. With a full day you can carry on to Aukštadvaris Regional Park, a separate protected area with its own administration, roughly half an hour further southwest along the same A16. Especially practical for couples and small families. The drive from Vilnius to Trakai is about 30–35 minutes.
