How to Sequence a Lithuania Itinerary

Lithuania rewards a slow, low-move plan. The three places most visitors want — Vilnius, Kaunas and the Klaipėda coast — sit on one rail corridor, and almost everything else is a day trip from one of them. The mistake first-timers make is not missing a sight; it is booking four hotels in seven nights and spending the trip in stations.

1. Fix the flights before anything else

Arrival and departure times are the only genuinely immovable parts of a plan, so set them first and let hotels, trains and day trips settle around them. If your route ends in Kaunas or on the coast, price an open-jaw booking — into Vilnius (VNO), out of Kaunas (KUN) — before you assume you have to backtrack. Plan deliberately for a late arrival: the airport train only leaves Vilnius Airport between 07:10 and 19:20, so after that you are on bus 88, the 88N night bus, or a Bolt.

2. Choose one base, and move at most twice

Vilnius works as a single base for a trip of up to about four nights, because Trakai is 30–40 minutes away by train and Kaunas is under an hour and a half. Add a second base only for the coast, where the travel time genuinely justifies sleeping there. Three bases in a week is the practical ceiling.

3. Give the long hop its own day

Vilnius to Klaipėda takes about 4h10 to 5h by train. Do not put a museum, a fixed-time tour or a ferry connection on the same day at the far end — arrive, drop bags, walk the Old Town, and start the coast properly the next morning. Keep a 60–90 minute buffer whenever a leg has to connect with the Klaipėda–Smiltynė ferry or with a timed event.

4. Decide day trip versus overnight for each add-on

Trakai is a half-day and never needs a bed. Kaunas works as a day trip but is much better with one night, because the interwar modernist architecture — inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023 — is spread across the New Town and rewards an unhurried afternoon. The Curonian Spit needs two nights if you want Nida rather than a rushed look at Smiltynė.

5. Check the timetable for your actual travel month

Electrification of the Vilnius–Klaipėda main line is in its final stage and still causes month-by-month timetable changes through 2026, with individual services canceled on specific dates. Check ltglink.lt for the month you are traveling rather than trusting a generic journey time, and compare coaches at autobusubilietai.lt on any leg where the train looks awkward.

6. Anchor the plan to what is actually on

For the rest of 2026 the fixed points are the autumn city festivals and the Vilnius Christmas market, which opens in late November and runs into December, with Kaunas following from late November. Looking further ahead, Užgavėnės falls in February 2027 and Kaziuko mugė in early March 2027. Put those dates into the planner before you book beds — they move hotel prices in both cities.

Realistic City-to-City Travel Times

These are the numbers to put into your day plan. They match the operator timetables used in our transport guide. Treat the slower end of each range as your planning figure unless you have booked a specific express service.

• Vilnius Airport (VNO) → Vilnius center: train in 7–8 minutes for €0.90, leaving the airport between 07:10 and 19:20; otherwise bus 88 in about 20 minutes, with the 88N night bus covering 22:30–05:30.
• Vilnius → Trakai: about 30–40 minutes by LTG Link train, roughly every one to two hours, with extra departures on summer weekends.
• Vilnius → Kaunas: 59 minutes on the non-stop LTG Link express, which began running on 29 March 2026; about 1h10–1h30 on the stopping services that call at Lentvaris, Vievis, Kaišiadorys and Palemonas.
• Vilnius → Klaipėda: about 4h10 to 5h by train. Coaches are broadly comparable — compare departures at autobusubilietai.lt.
• Kaunas → Klaipėda: about three hours by coach, which is the usual way to link the two cities; check current departures and fares at autobusubilietai.lt.
• Kaunas Airport (KUN) → Kaunas center: the airport is about 14 km out at Karmėlava, and city bus 29 reaches the bus and railway stations in roughly 40–50 minutes.
• Klaipėda → Smiltynė (Curonian Spit): a crossing of under 10 minutes on the passenger ferry from the Old Ferry Terminal, running about every 30 minutes in the warm season and hourly in the cold season; cars use the New Ferry Terminal. Timetables at keltas.lt.
• Smiltynė → Nida: about an hour by local bus down the spit through Juodkrantė, Pervalka and Preila; timetable and fares at visitneringa.com.
• Vilnius → Ignalina (Aukštaitija lakes): about 1h30–1h50 by train, with roughly seven departures a day in each direction; Palūšė is a short taxi or local bus ride from the station.

Three Route Skeletons That Actually Work

Pick whichever fits the number of nights you have, then paste the stops into the planner above and let it order your days. Every travel time below is one of the verified figures from the list above.

Skeleton A — Vilnius, 2–3 nights

Day 1. Land at VNO, take the airport train (7–8 minutes) or bus 88 into town, then walk the Old Town: Cathedral Square, Pilies gatvė, and Gediminas Tower for the view late in the afternoon.
Day 2. The Bernardine Garden and the Vilnia riverbank in the morning, Užupis after lunch, then the courtyards of Vilnius University or the MO Museum for a modern-art contrast.
Day 3 (optional). A half-day in Trakai: 30–40 minutes by train each way, the Island Castle on Lake Galvė, a kibinas for lunch, and back in Vilnius for dinner.

Moves: none. This trip never needs a car or an intercity ticket.

Skeleton B — Vilnius + Trakai + Kaunas, 4–5 nights

Nights 1–3, Vilnius. Skeleton A, including the Trakai half-day.
Day 4. Morning express to Kaunas (59 minutes, or 1h10–1h30 on a stopping train), drop your bags, then walk Laisvės alėja and Vilniaus gatvė into the Old Town, ending at Kaunas Castle and the confluence of the Nemunas and the Neris.
Day 5. The interwar modernist New Town — the reason Kaunas is on the UNESCO World Heritage List — followed by Žaliakalnis, reached by funicular. Fly out of Kaunas Airport (bus 29, roughly 40–50 minutes from the center) or take the train back to Vilnius.

Moves: one. An open-jaw flight into VNO and out of KUN removes the return leg entirely.

Skeleton C — Vilnius + Klaipėda + Curonian Spit, 6–8 nights

Nights 1–3, Vilnius. Skeleton A again, Trakai included.
Day 4. Train to Klaipėda, about 4h10–5h. Treat it as a travel day: arrive, settle in, and walk the Old Town and the Danė riverfront in the evening.
Days 5–6. Ferry from the Old Ferry Terminal to Smiltynė, then the local bus about an hour down the spit to Nida for the Parnidis Dune and Thomas Mann's summer house. Two nights in Nida beats two day trips from Klaipėda if you can get the beds.
Days 7–8. Palanga and its amber museum on the way north, or the train back to Vilnius. Flying home from Palanga Airport (PLQ) saves the long return leg.

Moves: two. This is the one route where a rental car earns its keep — for the spit south of Nida and the coastal road — although ferry, bus and train cover all of it without one.
