Curonian Spit Guide: Dunes, Beaches, and Logistics

Top Highlights

• Parnidis Dune above Nida — a bare drifting dune roughly 52 m above sea level, reached by boardwalk and stairs, with a granite sundial on the summit raised in 1995 and rebuilt in 2011 after storm damage.
• The Hill of Witches in Juodkrantė (Raganų kalnas) — a forest trail of carved wooden devils, witches and folklore figures, begun at sculptors' workshops from 1979 and run today by the Neringa Museums.

How Long to Stay

A day trip works, but 2–3 nights in Nida gives you weather flexibility and unrushed movement between the villages. Smiltynė to Nida takes about an hour by bus each way, so a same-day return spends roughly two hours on the road before you add the ferry crossing and the wait at each terminal.

Getting There

Nearly every route runs through Klaipėda. The Old Ferry Terminal (E. Galvanausko bul. 1, open 06:00–24:00) carries people, bicycles and pets but no motor vehicles, and crosses in about 15 minutes. The New Ferry Terminal (Nemuno g. 8) runs around the clock, takes cars and buses as well as pedestrians and cyclists, and crosses in about 20 minutes. From Smiltynė the local bus continues to Juodkrantė and Nida; the official Neringa tourism site lists fares of €3.00 Smiltynė–Juodkrantė, €6.00 Juodkrantė–Nida and €8.00 Smiltynė–Nida, sold on the bus by cash or card, online at autobusubilietai.lt, or at the Nida bus station. Flying in, Palanga (PLQ) is the closest airport at about 32 km by road from Klaipėda; Vilnius is roughly 300 km away, which is a long transfer to bolt onto a short trip.

Best Area to Stay

Nida is the main base: the most restaurants, the bus station, and Parnidis Dune within walking distance — it is where the 2–3 night recommendation applies. Juodkrantė is quieter and closer to Klaipėda (€3.00 from Smiltynė by bus against €8.00 to Nida), and it puts the Hill of Witches at the end of your street. Pervalka and Preila are smaller again and suit travelers who want almost nothing to happen. Staying in Klaipėda itself keeps you off the spit, but if you cross on foot it also keeps you clear of the vehicle entry fee. Compare the bases in detail.

Typical Costs

• Smiltynė ferry, return fares: €1.70 foot passenger (a bicycle travels free on that ticket), €7.70 motorcycle, €23.20 for a car of up to nine seats — the car fare covers the driver and passengers, who do not buy separate tickets. Current price list: keltas.lt.
• Neringa vehicle entry fee: €10 per car from 21 August to 19 June and €50 from 20 June to 20 August; fully electric cars pay €25 in that peak window and nothing outside it. Charged once per entry at the Alksnynė control post, 10 km along the Smiltynė–Nida road. Current rates: neringa.lt.
• Local bus: €3.00 Smiltynė–Juodkrantė, €6.00 Juodkrantė–Nida, €8.00 Smiltynė–Nida.
• Driving a car to Nida in high summer therefore starts at €73.20 — €23.20 ferry plus €50 entry — before fuel, parking or a single meal. Outside 20 June to 20 August the same trip is €33.20.
• Beds and food: peak-summer rooms in Nida book out early, and restaurant choice in the smaller villages thins sharply outside the season. Fares and fees are set annually, so check both official sites before you travel.

Safety Notes

Stay on the marked paths, stairs and platforms. The bare dunes are a protected part of Kuršių nerija National Park and movement off the marked routes is prohibited, because dune slopes and their vegetation are damaged easily and recover slowly. Bring a windproof layer even in July — the seaward side of the spit is exposed and the wind turns quickly — and carry water, since there is little shade on the open dune sections.

Common Mistakes

• Budgeting only the ferry fare. The €23.20 car crossing is not the cost of driving the spit. Neringa's entry fee is charged separately at the Alksnynė barrier, and between 20 June and 20 August it is more than double the ferry.
• Driving to the Old Ferry Terminal. It does not carry motor vehicles. Cars and buses use the New Ferry Terminal on Nemuno g.
• Trying to cover Juodkrantė, Pervalka, Preila and Nida in a single day.
• Forgetting the queue at each terminal on summer weekends, on top of the 15–20 minute crossing.
• Planning to continue into the Kaliningrad half of the spit — the Nida border crossing is listed as temporarily closed.
• Dressing for the forecast temperature instead of the wind.
