What the official advisories say in 2026

There is no "advise against all travel" or "advise against all but essential travel" zone anywhere in the country, Belarus and Kaliningrad frontiers included. On terrorism the FCDO says only that "Terrorist attacks in Lithuania cannot be ruled out" — its lowest-tier phrasing, not a heightened warning. We cite the US rating to the embassy, not an advisory date, because that date could not be verified at source.

Crime Data

Crime in Lithuania, in numbers

Most pages say "crime is low" and stop. These are Eurostat's police-recorded rates per 100,000 for 2024.

Burglary is the line to notice: 23.94 is the lowest of every country checked, and not narrowly — Austria records 700.12, Sweden 600.95. Theft runs at about one-fifth of the French rate. The caveat, once: recorded-crime figures partly reflect how offences are defined and how readily people report them. Perception agrees — 2.7% here, against Italy 6.4%, Germany 10.7% and France 14.7%.

The one statistic that looks bad

Lithuania recorded 76 intentional homicides in 2024, 2.63 per 100,000 — three times Germany's rate, 4.6 times Italy's. Any page that omits that is selling you something. Two facts change what it means. Eurostat's victim-offender data shows 25 of those 76 victims were killed by a partner or family member, so about a third of Lithuanian homicides happen inside a home; and 17% of the 42,961 offences registered nationally in 2025 involved intoxicated offenders. This is a domestic, alcohol-driven pattern rather than stranger violence in tourist areas, and shrinking: 8.90 per 100,000 in 2008, 2.63 in 2024.

One number to ignore: the "Safety Index" other pages quote. Numbeo's Crime Index of 32.80 for Lithuania, updated 31 August 2026, is crowdsourced opinion from 853 self-selected contributors pooled over five years, not a measurement. For scale, 1,449,052 foreign residents stayed in Lithuanian accommodation in 2024.

Vilnius

Vilnius: which areas actually need caution

No official body publishes a Vilnius neighbourhood crime ranking — the police crime map goes only to municipality level — so every blog listing rough districts invented it.

Vilnius records 1,929.2 offences per 100,000, above Klaipėda (1,696.6), Kaunas (1,666.2) and the national 1,484.9 — about 30% above the country, which is normal for a capital. In a city of roughly 610,000, the whole of 2025 produced 12 murders, 104 robberies and 2 firearms offences; between January and April 2026 robberies fell from 49 to 37 and thefts from 941 to 708.

Think in situations, not postcodes. Crowded central streets and public transport are where pockets get picked; unlit streets and parks after dark are what the FCDO tells you to avoid; the station surroundings feel rougher late at night than the Old Town. Petty Crime

Pickpockets, spiked drinks and the drug law not to test

The FCDO is direct: "Petty crime is common… beware of pickpockets in busy locations and on public transport… do not leave coats and handbags unattended in bars, pubs and clubs." In practice: Pilies gatvė at its busiest, Cathedral Square on a festival evening, the market halls, packed trolleybuses.

The shift no other guide mentions: swindling and fraud is now the second-largest recorded category after theft — 3,698 cases nationally in 2025 — and it is overwhelmingly online. The crime most likely to cost you money here arrives through a screen, so treat any "pay by bank transfer to hold this apartment" as a scam.

The FCDO also records drink spiking "in Vilnius and at festivals and events elsewhere in Lithuania", so never leave a drink unattended. The drug law is where visitors misjudge Lithuania badly: cannabis included, drugs are prohibited "even in very small quantities", with jail sentences up to 10 years, and airports scan transiting baggage — so it applies even if you are only changing planes.

Taxi Tariffs

Taxi scams, and the exact fares you should pay

Every guide repeats the FCDO line about using a metered registered taxi. None gives the number that makes it usable: Vilnius Airport publishes the maximum tariffs its rank operators may charge, on a sheet dated April 2026.

The charge that catches people is not the night rate. It is the word "weekends": the €2.10 per kilometre tariff applies all weekend and on public holidays, not only after 22:00, so a Saturday lunchtime ride bills at the night rate.

The rule of thumb is the useful part: the approved maximum to the Old Town is about €22 by day, so a flat €50 quote at the rank is more than double the sanctioned fare — walk to the next car. Official airport taxis carry stickers inside showing the tariffs; pay "only according to readings of a taximeter" and take the receipt, which the airport's overcharging complaints form requires. They accept cards, so "cash only" is not a condition you must accept — and the scam-proof options are Bolt, with 10 reserved airport spaces by the bus stops, or the train. Health & 112

Tap water, healthcare and the 112 number

The tap water is safe to drink straight, with no filtering or boiling. Vilniaus vandenys states its supply "is safe and of a good quality, does not exceed the limits and specific indicators" and meets Lithuanian hygiene norm HN 24:2017 and EU rules. It is groundwater from 287 wells across 33 catchment areas, with more than 20,000 laboratory examinations a year across 50 indicators.

112 covers police, ambulance, fire and rescue, and environmental protection. Lithuania's Emergency Response Centre confirms calls connect "even when having an insufficient account balance or using a mobile phone without a SIM card", that call takers work in Lithuanian, Russian, Polish and English, and that your location can be determined during the call.

For treatment you need an EHIC, or a GHIC if you are British — free, and good for state care at the same cost as a locally insured person. It covers no private clinic and no repatriation, and the FCDO is explicit that it "is not an alternative to travel insurance". Carry both.

Ticks

Ticks: the risk that is genuinely higher here

This is the one health risk where Lithuania is an outlier, and where competing pages go vague. In the ECDC's report for 2022 Lithuania had the EU/EEA's highest tick-borne encephalitis notification rate — 13.4 confirmed cases per 100,000 against an average of 0.81, roughly 16 times the European rate — and held that position five years running.

The counterweight comes from the same report: only 2.3% of European cases with importation data were travel-associated, so the burden falls on residents who spend long periods in forests. Seasonality is sharp — 90% of cases fall between June and November.

So the vaccine question has a real answer. TravelHealthPro states there is a risk "in all areas of this country" and recommends vaccination for travellers "visiting forested areas and urban parks, e.g. camping, fieldwork, hiking and hunting". A Vilnius Old Town weekend is not that profile. A week hiking in Aukštaitija or Dzūkija, or cycling the pine forest of the Curonian Spit in July, is exactly that profile — and courses must start weeks before you fly, so decide when you book.

Solo Travel

Solo female travel in Lithuania

The honest answer starts with a warning about the statistics rather than the statistics. Lithuania recorded 5.79 sexual-violence offences and 2.98 rapes per 100,000 in 2024, against Germany's 65.14 and 17.09, France's 140.75 and 65.95, and Sweden's 200.98 and 88.22. Do not read that as a risk ranking: recorded sexual-offence figures mostly reflect how each country defines the offence and how willing victims are to report it, so a low Lithuanian number is not proof of low incidence.

What genuinely makes solo travel easy here is duller: very low robbery and theft rates, compact well-lit centres, cheap ride-hailing, 112 operators who answer in English. After dark, use an app rather than a street-hailed car.

LGBTQ+

LGBTQ+ travel: the honest 2026 picture

Pages answer this with "be discreet" or "it is fine now". Both are wrong: the law and the daily experience point in opposite directions.

The deficit is in two places. Family recognition: zero on all eleven ILGA-Europe family criteria — no marriage, no registered partnership of any kind, no recognition of cohabitation, a constitutional limitation on marriage. Gender identity: no discrimination protection in employment, services, education or health, and no hate crime law covering it, so trans travellers are materially less protected than gay and lesbian ones.

What points the other way is not cosmetic. Lithuania scores the maximum on all six civil-society criteria — LGBTI events held without state obstruction and with adequate protection, organisations operating freely, no law limiting expression — and discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation is unlawful in services, employment and health. The FCDO is accurate: relationships are legal, marriages and partnerships are not, and "small towns and rural areas can be less accepting". Same-sex couples travel in Vilnius without trouble; your marriage simply has no standing here, which stops being abstract in a hospital.

Borders

Belarus and Kaliningrad: does the map matter?

The strongest single fact: the FCDO advice updated 11 August 2026 contains no "advise against travel" zone anywhere in Lithuania — not along the Belarus frontier, not beside Kaliningrad.

What is true is narrower. The FCDO notes that "some Ukrainian drones aimed at Russia have crossed into Lithuanian airspace"; for a visitor that means occasional flight disruption, not danger on the ground. Russian-plated vehicles may only enter for up to 24 hours transiting to or from Kaliningrad Oblast. We do not publish which Belarus crossings are open, because the status changes and no official page could be retrieved to confirm it — check with the Lithuanian authorities first.

The border hazard that actually affects tourists is a walking one. The Curonian Spit is divided between Lithuania and Russia, and the FCDO warns that "the walk along the Curonian Spit in Lithuanian territory will eventually reach Russian territory". Entry Rules

Entry in 2026: Schengen, 90/180 and the new EES

The thing most likely to disrupt your day in 2026 is not crime, it is the border queue. The EU Entry/Exit System is now being implemented across Schengen, Lithuania included: short-stay visitors may need to register fingerprints and a photograph, it is free, the record is valid for 3 years, and children aged 11 or younger are photographed but not fingerprinted. Allow extra time on entry and exit.

The standing rules are unchanged: visa-free tourism for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; a passport issued less than 10 years before you arrive and valid at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area — both, not either; overstay bans of up to 3 years. Our trip planner holds the dates.
