The 2026 calendar Vilnius has actually announced

Everything in the table below comes from the Go Vilnius announcement of 6 August 2026 and from the organiser’s own site. None of it is carried over from last season. Trader applications for the 2026 Kalėdų miestelis opened on 1 June 2026 and closed on 30 June 2026, which is why the dates were locked in this early.

Go Vilnius also confirms two fixtures for 2026 without giving dates, hours or prices for them: the ice rink in Town Hall Square and the two-storey carousel next to the market. Because 28 November 2026 falls on a Saturday and 27 December on a Sunday, the market covers five full weekends. This is the part other guides skip. Four things were still unpublished when we checked, and any page stating them as 2026 fact is guessing.

Re-check two pages, not ten. govilnius.lt carries the city announcement; kaledossostineje.lt, run by Vilniaus kultūros centras, carries the operational detail, and hours, session times and prices always appear there first.

Opening Hours

Opening hours: use last season’s grid until 2026 is published

The 2026 timetable is not out. The grid below is the 2025 season as published by the organiser, and it is the best available guide. The 2025 market ran 29 November to 28 December 2025 in the same square, one calendar day later than the 2026 edition.

The practical consequence matters more than the numbers. On weekdays nothing opens before noon, and in Vilnius the sun sets before 16:05 throughout the market’s run. Every visit is effectively an after-dark visit, which is the point, because the tree and the light installations are what you came for. Christmas Eve is the single day to plan around: an 11:00 to 17:00 window, and you want the first half of it.

On The Ground

Cathedral Square: the tree, the huts and the €2 cup nobody warns you about

The market fills Cathedral Square with the tree at its centre. In 2025 it was 48 wooden huts arranged as a promenade rather than a dense block, so you walk a loop instead of pushing through a scrum. That layout is why the square handles a Saturday evening better than its size suggests.

Go Vilnius lists what the huts sell: gingerbread, brightly coloured candies and mulled wine on the food side, and scented candles, amber jewellery and handmade wooden toys on the gift side. What neither the city nor the festival organiser publishes is what any of it costs. Individual traders set their own prices, so any page quoting you a per-cup mulled wine price in advance invented it. We are not going to add another invented number to that pile.

The hidden fee. Every drinks trader at the market uses reusable cups carrying a €2 deposit, added to your first drink and refunded when you hand the cup back at an EKO point. In 2025 there were two EKO points in Cathedral Square and one at the Town Hall Square ice rink, and they stayed open one hour later than the market itself. Two people having two drinks each are €8 down until they walk the cups back, and a surprising number of visitors go home having quietly donated the deposit. Keep the cups together and return them in one trip on your way out.

The tree is deliberately unpredictable. In 2025 it was a natural 16 m spruce in classic red and gold, the third natural tree in a row, donated by residents of Pagiriai in the Vilnius district and styled by the company Lumidėja. The design is kept secret until the lighting ceremony every year, and past themes have run from fairy tales to birthday cakes and clocks, so there is no preview to look for. Go Vilnius says the tree has been named the most beautiful in Europe four years running, which is the city agency’s own claim and is repeated here as its claim rather than as an independent finding. Correction

No, Vilnius is not the European Christmas Capital in 2026

Vilnius held the European Christmas Capital title for 2025 only. In November 2025 the Christmas Cities Network jury named Barcelona European Christmas Capital 2026, so Vilnius does not hold the title during the 2026–27 season. In the 2025 round Celje in Slovenia was named European Christmas City and Noja in Spain European Christmas Village.

This matters because most of the English-language Vilnius Christmas content online was written during the 2025 season and still uses the title in the present tense, and AI answers built on that content repeat the error. You do not need the title to justify the trip. Go Vilnius director Dovilė Aleksandravičienė has said around 100,000 tourists visit the city during the festive period, and the 2025–26 season ran almost six weeks, from the tree lighting on 29 November to the theatrical Three Kings procession on 6 January.

Ice Rink

Vilniaus ledas: a different square, and two free sessions every day

The rink is not in Cathedral Square, and people lose an evening to that assumption. Vilniaus ledas sits in Town Hall Square (Rotušės aikštė), about ten minutes on foot down Pilies and Didžioji streets, which is the same spine the Christmas train follows. It is run by Active Vilnius under the Kalėdos sostinėje festival, whose director is Paulius Jurgutis.

It also runs far longer than the market. In 2025–26 the rink opened on 30 November 2025 and closed on 1 February 2026, five weeks after the huts had gone. That season it was 900 sq m of wave-shaped ice with a new amphitheatre-style spectator stand seating about 100 people. Sessions last 45 minutes with 30-minute gaps for resurfacing: 10 sessions on weekdays and 11 at weekends, and places per session are limited.

The detail worth planning around: the first two sessions of every day, at 10:00 and 11:15, were free, and skate hire was free during them, with capacity of up to 120 skaters at a time. You may bring your own skates. Everything after that was paid, and the gap between the two columns below is the cost of not owning skates.

Hours in 2025–26 were Mon–Thu 10:00–22:00, Fri–Sat 10:00–23:15 and Sun 10:00–22:00, with session starts at 12:30, 13:45, 15:00, 16:15, 17:30, 18:45, 20:00 and 21:15, plus an extra 22:30 session on Fridays and Saturdays. Over the holidays the rink closed entirely on 24 December, then ran 12:30–23:15 on 25 December, 10:00–23:15 on 26 December, 10:00–22:00 on 31 December and 15:00–22:00 on 1 January. Demand is real: more than 40,000 people skated during the rink’s first Town Hall Square season in 2024–25, and by 8 January 2026 the following season had drawn more than 27,000 visitors, including tourists from 47 countries. The 2026–27 dates, hours and prices had not been published as of 31 August 2026, so check kaledossostineje.lt before you build a morning around a free session.

Paid Extras

The €5 Christmas train and the €6 carousel

Two ticketed attractions sit beside the market. Both are cheap enough that the decision is about time and queues rather than money.

The train boards at its main stop, Šventaragio g. 2, beside Cathedral Square, and loops Šventaragio, Pilies, Didžioji, Šv. Jono and Universiteto before returning. Tickets are sold at the stop for cash or card, and online. It is the one attraction with a confirmed 2026 window, 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, which is ten days longer than the market. It stops running during mass events such as the tree lighting and the Christmas Run, so 28 November and 5 December are the two evenings not to count on it. In the 2025–26 season it covered about 900 km and carried more than 12,000 passengers.

The carousel is a two-storey, 10 m wooden machine brought from Italy. In 2025–26 it ran from 30 November 2025 to 4 January 2026, turned for 400 hours and carried almost 30,000 riders. Here is the honest comparison: a five-minute turn at €6 a head is the first thing to cut if you are travelling with more than two children, while the train at €5 for a 20-minute loop of the Old Town is better value and doubles as a warm-up. Neither has published 2026–27 dates or prices, although Go Vilnius confirms both will be there.

Kaunas

Kaunas Christmas Market 2026: not announced yet, and this is the pattern

As of 31 August 2026 Kaunas had announced nothing about its 2026 Christmas season. There is no 2026 Christmas post in the kaunas.lt news archive and no 2026 tree tender announcement. In 2025 the equivalent announcements appeared on 13 June, 8 September and 6 November, so expect the first firm Kaunas dates in September and the full programme in early November.

The pattern itself is useful, because Kaunas consistently opens before Vilnius and stays open longer. It lit its tree on the evening of 22 November 2025, the first Lithuanian city to open the season that year and six days ahead of Vilnius, with a concert from 18:00 broadcast live on LRT. In 2024 it lit on 23 November at 19:30 in Vienybės aikštė, because Town Hall Square was under reconstruction, and that tree was an 18 m natural spruce. The 2024–25 Kaunas Christmas village in Vienybės aikštė traded from 23 November 2024 to 7 January 2025 inclusive, a 46-day run.

Kaunas splits its season across two squares, which is the thing visitors get wrong. Rotušės aikštė holds the market, Senelis Kalėda’s residence, an education dome and weekend concerts. Vienybės aikštė holds the ice rink and a second Christmas village. A free Christmas train runs the length of the Vilniaus gatvė pedestrian street, and that is the practical link between the two. The 2025 tree returned to a renovated Rotušės aikštė after a one-year break: a 65-year-old spruce over 17 m tall, donated by a Kaunas resident, Irena Juškevičienė, from the Petrašiūnai district. The city’s tender specification requires a natural spruce at least 15 m tall in one of those two squares, lit with outdoor-rated LED sources only, so the 2026 tree will be a real one.

Kaunas ice rink at Vienybės aikštė

The open-air rink opened on 28 November 2025 at 19:00 and ran daily until 31 January 2026. Hours were Mon–Wed 14:00–22:00, Thu–Fri 14:00–23:15, Sat 12:00–24:00 and Sun 12:00–21:15, with hourly 45-minute sessions and 15-minute resurfacing gaps, and the first weekday sessions free. Kaunas does not publish rink ticket prices on kaunas.lt, so treat any figure quoted elsewhere with suspicion and ask at the booth.

Beyond the two squares, Kaunas runs a December circuit of pop-up markets, including the Christmas Art Market at Kaunas Artists’ House (Putvinskio g. 56) and the Grand Kaunas Christmas Market at Žalgirio arena (Karaliaus Mindaugo pr. 50). Elsewhere

Klaipėda, Design Square and the charity fair

Klaipėda opened on the same day as Vilnius in 2025, lighting its tree on 29 November at 17:00 in Teatro aikštė, two hours earlier in the evening than the capital. Its open-air rink in the same square measured 15 m by 30 m for 2025–26, which is 450 sq m against 300 sq m the previous year, and a session cost €5 for an adult, €1 for a child up to shoe size 32 and €2 for visitors with disabilities. The city also turned Turgaus gatvė into a 200 m tunnel of lights using 30 poles 5 m tall and about 6 km of light strings, which photographs better than anything in Vilnius. Back in Vilnius, two secondary events deserve diary space. Vilnius Design Square (Kalėdinis dizaino skveras) is confirmed for 15–20 December 2026; in 2025 it took over Vinco Kudirkos aikštė on 17–21 December with more than 50 Lithuanian designers and makers, open Wed–Sat 11:00–19:00 and Sun 11:00–16:00. It is where you buy something you cannot buy at home, and it is the answer to the complaint that the main square sells the same gingerbread as everywhere else. The International Christmas Charity Fair, at the Contemporary Art Centre and Town Hall Square, reached its 23rd edition in 2025–26 and raised €110,000 for 12 organisations. The Vilnius Christmas Run, confirmed for 5 December 2026, drew a record 4,568 runners from more than 20 countries at its 50th edition in December 2025.

Stringing Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda together in one December week is the one version of this trip where a car beats the train, because the coast is the awkward leg. Winter rates are lowest booked well ahead.

Weather

December in Vilnius: what the numbers say to pack

Use the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service climate normals, measured to the WMO standard over 1991–2020, rather than a forecast you read in October.

Read the Vilnius December column again. The mean daily maximum is -0.1 °C, so the warmest part of an average December day sits at freezing point, and you will be standing still outdoors, after dark, holding a cold cup. That calls for insulated boots with genuine grip, because Old Town cobbles turn to wet ice, plus a thermal base layer, a hat, gloves and a deliberate plan to go indoors every 45 minutes. Kaunas is about 0.8 °C milder than Vilnius in December and Klaipėda on the coast averages 1.1 °C, so the capital is the cold one of the three. How little daylight you actually get

On 21 December 2026 the sun rises in Vilnius at 08:37 and sets at 15:56 local time, giving 7 hours 19 minutes of daylight. On the market’s opening day, 28 November 2026, it is 08:11 to 16:02. With the market opening at noon on weekdays and the sun gone before four, the sensible shape of a day is daylight sights first, Gediminas Tower, Užupis and the Cathedral, then the market once the lights are doing the work. December’s 24.6 sunshine hours across the entire month work out at roughly 48 minutes of sun a day, so do not build the trip around a bright afternoon.

The Holidays

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day: what stays open

Kūčios, Christmas Eve, is the most family-centred night of the Lithuanian year, and the city’s timetable reflects that. In 2025 the market opened only 11:00–17:00 on 24 December, the Town Hall Square ice rink closed completely, and the train and the carousel both ran 11:00–20:00. On 25 and 26 December the market ran 12:00–21:00, and the rink reopened at 12:30 on Christmas Day and at 10:00 on 26 December, staying open until 23:15 on both. Expect a similar shape in 2026 and confirm it on kaledossostineje.lt once the season programme is out.

Book a Christmas Eve restaurant table well in advance, or plan to eat where you are staying. Most Lithuanians are at home that night and the tables that do exist go early. What you are looking for is Kūčios food. Go Vilnius counts more than 100 traditional Christmas Eve dishes, all of them meatless and most of them vegan, with twelve served on the table, one for each month of the coming year. The two to try are kūčiukai, small poppy-seed dough bites usually eaten with poppy-seed milk, and spanguolių kisielius, a cranberry drink-dessert thickened with starch.

Logistics

Getting there, getting around and where to sleep

Stay in the Old Town. Cathedral Square and Town Hall Square are about ten minutes apart on foot along Pilies and Didžioji, and that one walk covers the tree, the huts, the carousel, the train stop and the ice rink without a transport ticket. Anywhere outside that ring turns a -2 °C evening into a logistics problem, and it is the mistake first-time visitors most often make when they book on price alone. The 28 November opening weekend and the December weekends are the tightest dates of the Vilnius winter.

Most visitors arrive at Vilnius Airport. The opening weekend of 28 November 2026 is a fixed, published date, which means it fills the way any fixed date does, and fares on the weekends before Christmas follow the same curve.

On the ground, expect disruption on opening night. On the 2024 tree-lighting night the city made all public transport free from 15:00 to 24:00 and closed T. Vrublevskio, Šventaragio and Barboros Radvilaitės streets to traffic from 18:00 to 22:00. The same pattern is likely on 28 November 2026, but confirm it before you book a taxi into the centre. Throughout December Vilnius also runs a free festive bus on a special route, operated by the municipal company JUDU with Vilnius public transport, and stages choir performances on board regular services. For trips out of the city, LTG Link ran decorated Christmas trains for a fifth season in 2025–26 on five routes until 11 January: Vilnius–Kaunas, Vilnius–Trakai, Vilnius–Klaipėda, Vilnius–Mockava and, until 11 December, Vilnius–Turmantas, all from Vilnius station at Geležinkelio g. 16.
