The ferry and the Neringa fee: budget these before you book

The Curonian Spit is reached by a short ferry across the strait from Klaipėda. Two terminals matter: the Old Ferry (Senoji perkėla, E. Galvanausko bul. 1) beside Klaipėda Old Town carries people, bicycles and pets but no motor vehicles, while the New Ferry (Naujoji perkėla, Nemuno g. 8), south around the port, takes cars and buses and operates around the clock. Check current departure times at keltas.lt before you set off.

Fares are AB Smiltynės perkėla’s published return prices (keltas.lt), checked 31 August 2026. One ticket covers the return leg on any later day, and a car ticket covers the driver and passengers.

The cost most guides miss: driving beyond Smiltynė into Neringa (Juodkrantė, Pervalka, Preila and Nida) needs a separate vehicle entry fee, charged once per entry at the Alksnynė control post 10 km along the Smiltynė–Nida road, or prepaid online. A passenger car pays €50 from 20 June to 20 August and €10 from 21 August to 19 June; fully electric cars pay €25 in that peak window and nothing outside it. As of 31 August 2026 the peak window has closed, so a car pays €10 until 19 June 2027 and the €50 rate returns on 20 June 2027 — which makes an autumn, winter or spring stay in Nida far cheaper to drive to. For a summer 2027 trip, budget €73.20 in ferry and entry fees before you have parked, or base yourself in Klaipėda and cross on foot for day trips. The Spit’s showpiece village and its most expensive base in peak summer: the Parnidis Dune, Thomas Mann’s house, the harbor and the best dining. Best for couples, culture and multi-night stays, and July–August rooms go early, so book flexible rates well ahead. Juodkrantė — quieter and better value (~20 km from the ferry)

Stays range from historic 19th-century wooden-villa hotels and lagoon-front hotels to guesthouses and cottages, plus a large resort hotel with indoor/outdoor pools and spa (Hotel Ąžuolynas) and historic villas such as Vila Flora. Smiltynė — a day visit, not a base

Administratively part of Klaipėda and right at the ferry landing, with the Lithuanian Sea Museum and its dolphinarium (Smiltynės g. 3) and long beaches — but only a couple of places to stay (Smiltynės Jachtklubas, Smiltynės Kurhauzas). Plan it as a day out from a Klaipėda hotel, or drive on to Juodkrantė and Nida.

Klaipėda — the practical, best-value base

The mainland port city at the ferry is the region’s transport hub with the widest choice: hostels and budget hotels through 3–4 star Old Town and boutique hotels to the 218-room Amberton on the Danė (Naujojo Sodo 1), which bills itself as the city’s largest 4-star-plus hotel. Ideal for car-free travelers and short trips doing the Spit as day trips; the Old Town sits beside the passenger ferry terminal. Indicative peak-summer doubles: budget ~€40–70; mid-range 3–4 star ~€80–150 (popular Old Town hotels can reach ~€180–200 on summer weekends).
