Christmas Markets
Last verified:
Kaunas lights its Christmas tree on Friday 27 November 2026 at 18:00 in Town Hall Square, one evening before Vilnius. That is the only 2026 date the city has published so far: here is what is confirmed, what is still missing, how the 2025–26 season ran across its two squares, and how to pair Kaunas with the Vilnius market.
Fast Answer
The 2026 season in Kaunas opens with the tree lighting on Friday 27 November 2026 at 18:00 in Town Hall Square (Rotušės aikštė). The opening and closing dates of the market itself, its hours and the ice-rink schedule had not been published as of 26 October 2026. The date comes from the Kaunas city municipality’s own announcement of 7 September 2026, which added that the programme was still being prepared; Kauno diena reported it the same day and LRT on 10 September. In 2025 the city published its season outline on 6 November and the detail followed on 18 and 27 November and 5 December, so expect the first 2026 details in early November, and treat any page that already lists 2026 market hours or rink prices as a guess.

Honest Gaps
Confirmed: one date and one place. On 7 September 2026 the municipality invited everyone to meet in Rotušės aikštė on 27 November at 18:00 to light the main city tree, and said the programme was being prepared. Nothing else for 2026 had followed on kaunas.lt by 26 October 2026: a search of its news archive for the Christmas tree and the Christmas market returns no 2026 Christmas release, and the seasonal site kaledos.kaunas.lt that carried the 2025 programme redirects to the municipality’s home page. We will re-check in early November, when the 2025 pattern says the first details should appear.
What that means in practice: plan the 27 November evening with confidence, but do not fix a late-December or January visit to Kaunas around the market until the closing date is out. Last season the Vienybės aikštė rink was scheduled to run daily until 31 January 2026, more than a month after the date on which Vilnius closes its huts this year (27 December), so Kaunas has tended to stay open longer; a tendency is not a date.

Layout
Kaunas splits its season between two squares, and visitors who find only one of them miss half of it. In 2025–26 the main tree, the market huts with food and hot drinks, Senelis Kalėda’s residence, an education dome and the weekend concerts were all in Rotušės aikštė, the newly renovated Old Town square. Vienybės aikštė, just off Laisvės alėja in the New Town, held the open-air ice rink and a second, smaller Christmas village with its own workshop dome, children’s meetings with Santa and weekend character visits. A free Christmas train ran along Vilniaus gatvė, the pedestrian street that links the Old Town to Laisvės alėja, which is the practical way between the two with children in tow.
The Rotušės aikštė programme was weekend-based. For 2025 the city announced concerts on 5–6 December, DJ sets with an LED show on 12–13 December and carol evenings with choirs and gospel ensembles on 19–21 December, with Christmas carols again on the eve of Christmas Eve, as the 6 November announcement put it. The education dome hosted museums, libraries and other institutions from Monday to Thursday and free creative workshops from Friday. Expect a similar shape in 2026, published through November.
The tree itself has become part of the story. The city’s 2025 tender asked for a natural spruce at least 15 m tall in Rotušės or Vienybės aikštė, lit with outdoor-rated LEDs only, and a 60-minute lighting show fit for national television. What arrived was a 65-year-old spruce more than 17 m tall, donated by a Kaunas resident from the Petrašiūnai district and dressed in Art Deco motifs, a nod to the interwar modernism that put Kaunas on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023. The 2026 tree had not been described by 26 October 2026.
Ice Rink
The rink is the one fixture with a fully published 2025–26 timetable, so it is the best guide to what 2026–27 will look like. It opened in Vienybės aikštė on Friday 28 November 2025 at 19:00 with professional skaters, a light, laser and fire show and a DJ, and was scheduled to run daily until 31 January 2026, more than two months after the tree lighting. Sessions started every hour and lasted 45 minutes, with a 15-minute break to resurface the ice; weekdays had seven or eight sessions, weekends more, and extra sessions were added for the school holidays.
| Day | 2025–26 rink hours, Vienybės aikštė |
|---|---|
| Mon–Wed | 14:00–22:00 |
| Thu–Fri | 14:00–23:15 |
| Sat | 12:00–24:00 |
| Sun | 12:00–21:15 |
| First weekday sessions | Free |
The detail worth planning around is that first line: on weekdays the first sessions of the day were free. The city did not publish ticket prices in its releases, so ask at the rink or check kaledos.kaunas.lt once it is live again, and treat any price quoted elsewhere with suspicion. On opening night traffic on K. Donelaičio gatvė was restricted and the city asked visitors to come on foot or by public transport; expect the same advice around Rotušės aikštė on 27 November 2026.
Kaunas vs Vilnius
Kaunas lights its tree on Friday 27 November 2026; Vilnius lights its own on Saturday 28 November in Cathedral Square, and the Vilnius market then runs until 27 December. The two cities are an LTG Link train ride apart, from about an hour, so one weekend covers both openings: Kaunas on the Friday evening, Vilnius on the Saturday. Our Vilnius Christmas Market 2026 guide has the confirmed Vilnius dates, last season’s hours and prices and an honest list of what Vilnius has not published yet, and the transport in Lithuania guide covers fares and how to book the train.

If you only have one evening, Vilnius has the larger market, the Cathedral Square setting, a ticketed train and carousel and a published 2026 calendar. Kaunas was the first Lithuanian city to light its tree in 2025 and opens a day ahead of Vilnius again in 2026, scheduled its rink to run into late January last season, and in 2025 made a point of a natural, locally donated tree in a freshly renovated square. Doing both is the easy answer, and the train timetable makes it one.
Logistics
Stay in the Old Town if the market is the point of the trip: Rotušės aikštė is on your doorstep and Vilniaus gatvė leads straight to Laisvės alėja and the rink. A base around Laisvės alėja works just as well and puts you next to Vienybės aikštė. Either way everything is walkable, and on the 27 November opening evening you will want it to be: in 2025 the city asked visitors to come to the tree-lighting concert by public transport, and to the rink opening on foot or by public transport; expect the same advice on 27 November 2026. In December the sun sets around four in the afternoon, so almost every market visit is an after-dark visit; dress for a Baltic winter evening and pick a hotel with breakfast, because the mornings start late and dark too.
Our Kaunas travel guide compares the areas, typical costs and the train from Vilnius in detail, and the events in Lithuania calendar lists what else is on that week. Flying in? Kaunas has its own airport (KUN); if you fly into Vilnius (VNO), the train reaches Kaunas from Vilnius station; our cheap flights to Lithuania page refreshes sample fares into Vilnius daily.
Hotels
The 27–28 November weekend is the one fixed date in the Kaunas winter, and it is also the Vilnius opening weekend, so Old Town rooms in both cities go first. Search your exact dates, filter by free cancellation in case the November programme moves your plans, and keep the walk to Rotušės aikštė under fifteen minutes.
Tip: filter by free cancellation and breakfast included; a December morning in Kaunas starts late and dark.

Friday 27 November 2026 at 18:00 in Town Hall Square (Rotušės aikštė). The Kaunas city municipality posted the date on its Facebook page on 7 September 2026, saying the programme was still being prepared; Kauno diena reported it the same day and LRT on 10 September 2026. It is one evening before the Vilnius tree lighting on Saturday 28 November.
The city had not published the market dates, opening hours or programme as of 26 October 2026, and its seasonal site kaledos.kaunas.lt was redirecting to the municipality home page. In 2025 the season opened with the tree lighting on 22 November, the Town Hall Square programme ran on weekends until Christmas and the Vienybės aikštė ice rink was scheduled to run until 31 January 2026; the 2025 outline came on 6 November and the detail followed on 18 and 27 November and 5 December, so expect the first 2026 details in early November.
In 2025–26 it was split across two squares: Rotušės aikštė (Town Hall Square) in the Old Town held the tree, the market huts, Santa’s residence, an education dome and weekend concerts, while Vienybės aikštė, just off Laisvės alėja, held the open-air ice rink and a second, smaller Christmas village. A free Christmas train ran along Vilniaus gatvė, the pedestrian street between them. The 2026 tree lighting is again in Rotušės aikštė.
Yes, last season an open-air rink stood in Vienybės aikštė. In 2025–26 it opened on 28 November 2025 at 19:00 and was scheduled to run daily until 31 January 2026, Mon–Wed 14:00–22:00, Thu–Fri 14:00–23:15, Sat 12:00–24:00 and Sun 12:00–21:15, in hourly 45-minute sessions with the first weekday sessions free. The city did not publish ticket prices, and the 2026–27 rink had not been announced as of 26 October 2026.
Yes. Kaunas lights its tree on Friday 27 November 2026 and Vilnius on Saturday 28 November, and the Vilnius market then runs until 27 December 2026 in Cathedral Square. The two cities are linked by LTG Link trains taking from about an hour, so one weekend covers both openings, Kaunas on the Friday evening and Vilnius on the Saturday.
Both squares are open public space and the city has not published any admission charge for the market or the tree lighting. The ice rink is ticketed by session, apart from the free first weekday sessions in 2025–26, and the Christmas train along Vilniaus gatvė was free in 2025–26. No 2026–27 prices had been published as of 26 October 2026.
